A 120 Hz input can deliver up to 120 unique source frames each second. The 240 Hz+ panel refresh describes how frequently the installed display can update that source frame across the full wall. At the maximum input rate, SilkStream has at least two full-panel refresh intervals available for every incoming frame. It does not invent motion detail or turn 120 frames per second into native 240 fps content.

Frame rate and refresh rate are different measurements: frame rate belongs to the source, while refresh rate belongs to the display. Intel's VSync guidance describes synchronizing application frame rate with display refresh rate, reinforcing that they are separate stages of the system.

The remaining specification is the scan architecture. SilkStream uses a 1/40 scan rate, meaning the driver sequences the image through 40 pixel groups. The arithmetic is straightforward: 15,360 per-pixel refresh cycles divided across 40 scan groups equals 384 nominal full-panel scan cycles per second. Opal specifies the resulting panel performance conservatively as 240 Hz+ rather than presenting 384 Hz as a video-input claim.

The Short Version

120 Hz is the maximum incoming video rate. 240 Hz+ is the full-panel refresh capability. 15,360 Hz is the per-pixel driver refresh. The 1/40 scan rate connects the pixel-level number to the full image surface.

Why 120 Hz Input Is Substantial

Film, television, streaming, and live sports commonly arrive at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second. High-performance gaming and other premium sources can reach 120 fps. The HDMI 2.2 specification continues to include 4K120 among its supported formats. For Boulder, that standardized 4K120 path matches the display's 120 Hz input ceiling.

The source, switcher, cabling, processor, and input configuration must all support that rate. If one device in the chain is limited to 60 Hz, the display receives 60 unique frames per second regardless of its panel capability.

Why 240 Hz+ at the Panel Still Matters

A panel that operates faster than the incoming signal has more timing headroom for presenting each frame. At 120 Hz input, SilkStream has at least two full-panel refresh intervals per source frame. At 60 Hz, it has at least four. That additional temporal capacity supports consistent frame presentation and gives the controller more room to manage the display surface.

The 15,360 Hz per-pixel refresh also matters when the wall is photographed or filmed. Higher-frequency pixel driving can reduce the likelihood of rolling bars and scan artifacts being captured, although camera shutter, frame rate, lighting, processor settings, and synchronization still affect the result. No display specification can guarantee artifact-free capture under every camera configuration.

What 240 Hz+ Does Not Mean

A repeated frame remains the same frame. Panel refresh does not add unique motion information that the source never supplied. Without documented interpolation or another subframe process, a 120 fps source remains 120 fps even when the panel refreshes more frequently.

Motion quality also depends on source quality, frame cadence, processing, response behavior, and calibration. SilkStream's value is the panel-side capacity it brings to that complete system, not a claim that one number overrides every other part of the signal chain.

Specifications establish capability, but motion should still be evaluated in person with familiar content. Ask the dealer to demonstrate 24, 60, and 120 Hz sources, verify the processor output, and show how the wall behaves with sports, cinema, gaming, and camera capture under the room's intended lighting.
