There's a reason movie theaters are dark, projector screens are far away, and most TVs top out at 85 inches. Large-format displays have always come with a compromise: the bigger the screen, and the closer you sit, the harder your eyes have to work.
That's been true for decades. Projectors flicker, LCD panels blur, and LED video walls, for all their advantages in brightness, contrast, and longevity, have carried their own version of this trade-off since the technology first appeared.
Today, Opal Screens is announcing something we've spent two years developing: a technology that eliminates that trade-off entirely. We call it SilkStream.
The Big-Screen Problem Nobody Talks About
When a display fills your field of vision, your eyes become incredibly sensitive to things you'd never notice on a smaller screen. Subtle flicker, slight motion blur, and a faint shimmer during dark scenes are all common characteristics of large-format LED displays. These aren't things you'd point at and call a "problem," but they're things you feel after 90 minutes of watching, as a heaviness behind your eyes or a desire to look away for a moment.
This happens because of how LED panels are driven. On every LED video wall in production today, the pixels don't all stay lit at the same time. They cycle on and off in rapid groups, creating the illusion of a stable image. The industry standard for this cycling speed sits between 1,920 and 3,840 times per second.
For years, that was considered fast enough. For a digital sign in an airport or a menu board in a restaurant, it is. But for a 165-inch screen six feet from your couch, it's not even close.
What SilkStream Changes
SilkStream is Opal Screens' proprietary high-refresh display technology, and it represents a fundamental advancement in how an LED video wall renders an image. Nothing else on the market today works quite like it.
4x the industry standard
True high-frame-rate playback
HDR that actually delivers
At 15,360Hz, SilkStream cycles its pixels so rapidly that each LED spends significantly more time in its "on" state during every refresh. The light output becomes genuinely stable, not just "fast enough to trick your eyes," but actually, physically stable in a way you can feel the moment you sit down in front of it.
The difference is immediate. Flicker disappears completely. Motion becomes razor-sharp at up to 240 frames per second. Dark scenes hold their depth without any shimmer or vibration. And your eyes simply relax, because the light hitting them is clean and consistent in a way that previous-generation panels could not achieve.
The Camera Test
There's a quick way to understand what SilkStream solves. Pull out your phone, open the camera, and point it at any LED video wall you can find. You'll almost certainly see dark horizontal bars rolling through the image, or strange color banding that isn't visible to your naked eye.
That's not a camera glitch. Your phone's shutter is catching the exact moment when portions of the display are dark, mid-cycle, waiting for their turn to light up. This happens on virtually every LED wall on the market, and it's so common that most people assume it's just what LED walls do on camera.
When you point that same camera at a SilkStream panel, the bars are gone. The image is perfectly uniform because the refresh cycles are so fast that no consumer camera shutter speed can catch the gaps between them.
This matters more than you might think. Your video wall will be photographed, it will show up on video calls, guests will record it, and your kids will post it to social media. With SilkStream, the wall looks as good on screen as it does in person, every single time.
240fps: Not Marketing. Math.
You've seen "240Hz" on gaming monitors, where it's become something of a buzzword. On a conventional display, that number tells you the screen redraws 240 times per second, and that's the whole story.
SilkStream operates on a different level. When a 240fps signal hits a Boulder Series panel, each of those 240 frames is backed by a 15,360Hz refresh engine, which means 64 refresh cycles supporting every single frame of content. The result is 240fps playback with a level of stability and precision that standalone monitors simply cannot match.
When you watch a puck cross the ice in a hockey game, follow a car through a corner in Formula 1, or track a basketball through a fast break, your eyes follow the motion the way they would in real life. There is no blur, no smearing, and no visual compromise at any speed.
Built on BlackFire
SilkStream doesn't exist in isolation. It's built on our BlackFire platform, where the LED architecture is designed from the ground up for precision and durability. BlackFire's advanced packaging allows the kind of tight, fast electrical connections between driver and pixel that SilkStream demands. When you're switching LEDs on and off more than 15,000 times per second, that precision is everything.
The combination of BlackFire and SilkStream is something we're incredibly proud of. These are two proprietary Opal Screens technologies, working together, delivering an experience that nothing else in the market can replicate today.
Available First in the Boulder Series
SilkStream debuts in our Boulder Series: 0.9mm pixel pitch BlackFire panels built for premium residential theaters, dedicated media rooms, and high-end commercial environments. The Boulder Series pairs SilkStream's 15,360Hz refresh with 1,000-nit peak brightness and true 240fps content support. It is the most advanced panel Opal Screens has ever produced, and it represents the new standard for what a video wall should be.
The Next Generation of Display
SilkStream is where LED video wall technology is headed. As screens get bigger and viewing distances get shorter, the old standards will no longer be acceptable. The demand for stable, flicker-free, high-frame-rate display will become the baseline expectation, not a premium feature.
Opal Screens is getting there first. We believe every video wall should eventually feel this good to watch, and the Boulder Series is the beginning of that vision.
See It to Believe It
We could keep talking about refresh rates and frame rates, but SilkStream is one of those things that makes sense the instant you see it in person. The stability, the motion clarity, and the way a two-hour movie feels effortless instead of exhausting are all best experienced firsthand.
